Here is an explanation of the historical volume charts for International Business Machines:

The main trace on the top chart is the Monthly Average Daily Volume for the company. Linear Trend is plotted in blue. Note that this trend is derived after the seasonal component is removed from the data.

Typical Seasonal Patterns might show a January Effect, and possibly some quarterly distortions due to the periodic release of financial reports.

Cyclical Patterns represent longer term changes in trading volume that sometimes reflect the operations of the general business cycle.
