Analysis of Volume for Past Five Years of Dow Industrials

Here is an explanation of the historical volume charts for Dow Industrials:

The main trace on the top chart is the Monthly Average Daily Volume for the company. Blue marks the de-seasonalized trend, which is a least squares linear regression applied to the DJIA prices after seasonal variations have been filtered out.

Orange represents the Seasonal Component of Transaction Volume. A typical Seasonal Pattern may show a January Effect each year.

Cyclical Patterns represent longer term changes in trading volume that sometimes reflect the operations of the general business cycle.
